Vetta Nano-Lux Redux -by Michael Hopkins
On December 16, 2008 we presented a review of the Vetta Nano-Lux lighting system. You can read that review by clicking here.
The purpose of this follow up is to report on the life of the Vetta system which has found its way onto my mountain bike as the primary lighting system. The next phase will be to install the system on my wife’s commuter rig. The commuter setup is likely to prove to be the setup of choice. The system is still not the perfect system but for the money it is hard to do any better. The battery life, running in mixed high and low mode, turned out to be 24+ hours before beginning to lose brightness. But the best part was it took me all of three minutes to fix the problem by dropping four new batteries into the tube and off we went. The system has seen a fair share of wet, foggy and cold weather rides and has to date suffered not one failure. There are now a couple of scratches on the battery tube caused by over riding the available light while using one of the colored filters. The problem with the original filters is the transparency of the filters, a problem that Vetta has fixed with the newest light by making the filters more transparent allowing more of the light to pass through. A small but annoying problem taken care of and an excellent example of Vetta’s concern for the consumer.
One of the things that has caused some problems is running the head lamp taillight combination as a helmet mounted unit. The battery tube is a tad too long to fit easily in a jersey pocket and the switch lacks a convenient mounting point and sometimes ends up flapping against your chest. Once again Vetta has fixed the problem in the latest version of this excellent light by providing a way to clip the on off switch to the cable leading from the battery to the light. We look forward to continuing to evaluate the product until the end of the night riding season and beyond, at least until we wear this thing out.
Oh yeah, the taillight continues to be the best designed and executed taillight on the planet and people comment about how effective it is. This feature alone makes it worth the purchase price. |
