It was a hot, muggy end-of-summer day in Greenville, South Carolina as 35 riders lined up to vie for the prestigious title of US National Time Trial Champion. Riding on a flat but technical course of 33.4km (ridden in 3 laps), the time trial specialist gave it their all for the chance to ride in the Stars and Stripes jersey.
Defending US National Champion, Dave Zabriske (Garmin-Chipotle) was in attendance along with several high quality world class time trial specialists including Christian Vance Velde (Garmin-Chipotle) , Tom Zirbel (Bissel) and Michael Creed (Rock Racing). Garmin – Chipotle proved to be the strongest team as virtually each rider put their name ot the top of the leader board. At mid-race Gramin’s Steven Cozza was first at the two intermediate check points and set the best time with a third of the riders still to go. Cozza took the lead from teammate Tom Danielson and held it throughout the last part of the race. Would it be enough to hold off the pre-race favorites of Christian Vande Velde and reigning champion Zabriskie? The answer was no…. However, the supremacy of the Argyle Armada did not go without challenge as Bissell’s Tom Zirbel stepped up and rocked the course with a new best time of 40.44, besting Vande Velde with Zabriskie still on course. But DZ was feeling the power of riding as defending champion and led at each check point including the only one that counts, the final one with a winning time of 40.39. Repeating his effort from 2007, Dave Zabriskie will ride for another year in red, white and blue. All in all it was a very satisfying effort for the Burrito Boys and US time trialists in general. Congratulations to David Zabriske on his second consecutive time trial championship. |
