Preview: 2010 Vuelta a España
Wednesday, 25 August 2010

Viva la Vuelta! Take a look at the first nine stages leading up to the first rest day in this year's course.

The Stages

Break out the tapas and sangria!  Its time for the final grand tour of the year --  La Vuelta a Espana.  It’s the “Platinum Edition” of the Vuelta, with the first race held 75 years ago.  Because of war and other circumstances, this will be the 65th actual running of the race.  Running counter clock-wise starting in Seville, the route will finish in Madrid as usual.  Several strong contenders will vie for the brand new leader’s jersey.   After years of the traditional Golden jersey, the organizers have opted for a red version to commemorate the traditional Spanish national team colors.

Generally regarded as a difficult overall course, this Vuelta spreads its variety of stages throughout, so riders will need to stay fresh all three weeks.  Eleven of the stages are listed as flat, while only 8 days are in the medium to high mountains.  Forty rated climbs await, with 3 Hors Categorie and 10 Category One climbs listed.  There are also 6 summit finishes to add to the excitement.  The two remaining stages are time trials, one individual and one team.
