Stage 1 of the 11th annual AMGEN Tour of California began Sunday under overcast skies for a 108.7-mile loop around San Diego. The World Champion, Peter Sagan of Tinkoff, garnered the first win for the week, and his 14th stage win in California ahead of Wouter Wipper of Cannondale Pro Cycling and Dylan Groenewegen of Lotto NL-Jumbo in third. Michael Sheehan of Jelly Belly sits third on GC ahead of Groenewegen, after earning valuable sprint bonus seconds during the stage.

The 2016 Amgen Tour of California presented by AEG came in like a lion with World Champion and reigning race champion Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff roaring to victory in a bunch sprint to the finish line in Mission Beach, San Diego, putting him back into the yellow leader jersey he wore at the race’s conclusion last year. Today’s stage kicked off the 11th annual 8-day stage race, which features some of the most accomplished riders in the sport competing across 782 miles before concluding in Sacramento next Sun., May 22.
Peter Sagan Sprints to Opening Stage Victory and GC Lead
The UCI World Road Race Champion, Peter Sagan, got his Amgen Tour of California campaign off to a perfect start sprinting to a resounding stage victory in San Diego. Peter’s first race back after a break following his successful classics campaign proved he is still riding strongly as he found a perfect opening in the hectic sprint finish to take the win and the first leader’s jersey with it.
Defending Champion Peter Sagan Returns to Amgen Tour of California
Following a break after the successful Spring Classics campaign, combined with a few mountain bike forays to test his off-road form, 13-time stage winner at the race Peter Sagan will return to road action at the Amgen Tour of California this May. Peter won the event in 2015 and will be looking to add to his tally of stage successes at this year’s edition.
